CHARACTER INFO

Character Name: Mami Tomoe
Character Canon: Puella Magi Madoka Magica

History: The executive summary is that in episode 3, her height is greatly reduced.

AU History: Mami Tomoe was born in Citadel as the child of two Windblessed. They were not in the Valkyries, but were instead respected scholars in the city. She might have followed in their footsteps; she was ever a smart girl, and she might have made a good teacher or a good diplomat. She developed her Enlightened abilities when she was twelve; at first, this only consisted of basic Fairy-type moves, whichw as considered a little strange. She could make ribbons, but her parents were sure it could be useful. Perhaps a career as a performer was in her future.

Unfortunately, it wasn't meant to be. A large rogue Spiritomb named Walpurgis attacked the Tomoes while they were on a trip out of the city. Mami's parents were killed; Mami was severely wounded and found by her father's brother, who had been out at the time. He worked as logistical support for the Valkyries. He suggested to Mami that she train; that she become stronger and join the Valkyries. She didn't want someone to experience the pain that she did, and so she agreed.

Ever since then, Mami has thrown herself into life in the Valkyries.

The Valkyries became her family. They offered her a way to find meaning in her life, though she has taken that a little too far sometimes. She became something of a big sister to the younger Valkyries, especially the ones in training. She looks after them, but she is also something of a famous workaholic; she doesn't have much of a life outside of the Valkyries. She has since become a young ace Valkyrie, and is something of a hero; people who work with the Valkyries have probably heard about her, though she is a star beginning to rise rather than a famous hero.

She wants to protect Citadel and -- to a lesser, but still important extent -- the rest of the world from the machinations of Gigas, from dangerous Pokemon like that rogue Spiritomb, and other dangers. She doesn't want to see more orphans like herself. Mami doesn't share those feelings often.

Canon Personality: Outwardly, Mami is a cool and confident girl that fits the image that her younger peers might expect of a more experienced magical girl. She handles situations with aplomb; from what others see, she approaches life-threatening situations with a smile on her face and absolute confidence in her abilities. Outside of a fight, she smiles easy and does her best to look cool in every situation -- reassuring her juniors with their classwork and acting the part of a big sister in their social lives with ease.

Part of this entails putting on an elegant facade. Mami's outfit is a very classy (and Western) look, like something that stepped out of the nineteenth century. Her personality matches her appearance; she may be leaping into battle against terrible Witches and Familiars, but she does so with grace and style. She does the same in her social life; she is often very prim and proper, and she can throw one hell of a fabulous tea party.

This attitude, though, is bolstered by a sense of pragmatism. She is also quite rational and cautious, to the point that she can be dangerous. She has -- and espouses -- a strong sense of justice, but Mami isn't a blind fool. When she senses a threat, she doesn't wish for the best, but instead takes action to deal with it. Case in point, when she feels that Homura is a danger to her and her friends in the series, she is quick to confront her and warn her that they could become enemies. Mami is entirely willing to fight people if she must.

She is a natural leader (or at least, she has practiced at making her leadership seem natural). She comes across as relaxed and easygoing; her smiles can even seem lazy and she is outwardly very cheerful. However, that pragmatism shows in the way that she will give orders if she needs to -- and tell people uncomfortable truths they might not want to hear, such as questioning what Sayaka planned to use her wish on.

She looks out for the other, younger girls. Mami cares about them, can be friendly with them, and can joke around with them, but she also knows that she has to keep a distance. She might be able to bake a cake and have tea with them at her apartment, but she keeps herself distant. It's partly so it is easier to tell them what to do and keep their respect.

But it's also because she isn't naturally courageous and fearless, nor is she really a natural leader. She learned to put on an act because she was scared of death, and she built a careful persona around herself to be exactly the sort of person that she thought she should be. This has led to her feeling lonely; she keeps a lot of her emotions to herself, especially the negative ones, and feels that she has no one to confide in. She wants that.

What isn't faked is her sense of justice. Mami looks at the world and doesn't see a wonderful place, but she would like to make it so. She would like to use her powers to make people smile; to keep people safe from the Witches and Familiars. This is a strong feeling, but it's also ultimately her undoing, because the world isn't that way despite her best efforts. She keeps others at bay partially because of this.

When it falls apart, it falls apart badly. In the main timeline of the anime, she dies before it can. In others, where she learned the truth, Mami cracked badly. She doesn't handle her worldview shattering like that so well: she succumbs to despair or, worse, tries to kill her friends to spare them from a fate that she feels is worse than death. Mami doesn't handle stress so well, and when things fall apart, she can crumble without support. She has, unfortunately, gotten herself into the habit of pushing support away.

AU Deviation: The biggest change is that there is not a race of emotionless superbeings harnessing human energy to delay the heat death of the universe at BNW (unless you have a hell of a surprise in store for us). Mami hasn't been turned into a magical girl slash lich by Kyubey, with all that entails: she isn't headed towards inevitable doom as a Witch, towards being killed by a Witch, being killed by her friends after she snaps upon learning the truth, or being saved by her friend becoming a god. This means, in short, Mami is considerably more likely to have a happier existence.

She is also not quite as alone as she was in the series. In the series, she ultimately became a magical girl who operated alone (after her former protege Kyouko left). Here, she is a member of the Valkyries. She feels lonely, but in the sense that she puts on a brave face to act like a heroine to the rest of the Valkyries. She stands with them, but apart at the same time; she doesn't feel like any of them could really understand her. She is extremely loyal to Citadel and the Valkyries, because she made them a replacement family for the parents that she lost.

She is still frightened of death, but it takes a different form. Her mother and father were killed by a wild Spiritomb named Walpurgis (incidentally, credit where it's due: that was on the old Kyouko's app and I decided it was cool enough to use twice!). She is scared that the returning gods and wild Pokemon could do that again. She tries to tell herself that they can stop it, but she isn't so sure. She feels a little hopeless.

That hopelessness could grow into something worse. What can they really do about the gods?

She is also a little vengeful towards wild Pokemon that attack humans. She doesn't mind putting them down; she isn't bloodthirsty, but she is pragmatic about it, and won't hesitate to shoot first and ask questions later. This isn't a situation encountered in the series -- Witches and Familiars were always threatening in a way that Pokemon might not be.

Finally, she is older than her canon. She was about fifteen here; she is eighteen at BNW, just to make it easier to have her status as a youthful ace Valkyrie be believable.

Canon Abilities: Every Puella Magi gets two powers: a special magical power and weapons they can use. Mami's power consists of creating and summoning magical golden ribbons. She can manipulate these considerably; Mami uses them to catch allies in a mass, to bind enemies up within them, as a melee weapon, and to leap around while using the ribbons like a whip. They can become extremely long and flexible, which helps.

Mami can also create magical firearms. These are typically percussion lock rifles and pistols of ordinary size, though quite fancy. She makes and discards them rapidly; it's not uncommon for her to make a row of a dozen rifles, and simply pick each one up and fire them in succession. She can also make an enormous gun and shoot it; she dubbed the attack "Tiro Finale."

Enlightened Abilities: Mami is an Enlightened from Citadel, and is thus a Child of the Howling Gale. Her typing, however, is Fairy and Normal.

At her initial stage, she can do the standard limited flight that any Child of the Howling Gale can do. However, using her Fairy-type powers, she is capable of creating ribbons like in her canon; these are a little more ephemeral and can wink out of existence easily if she gets distracted. By combining her wind manipulation from being a Child of the Howling Gale and her ribbons, though, she is capable of incredible stunts of whipping through a city like -- basically -- Spiderman.

She can also use her Normal-type abilities to create firearms and do ranged attacks. This isn't creating a literal, real firearm, but rather a manifestation of her Pokemon abilities -- not unlike Moves that create bullets or swords. Her weapons are single shot, percussion lock guns. At first, she can only create a few, and can't quite do the intense one girl firing squad action.

Her second evolution increases these abilities. First, she can begin making far more elaborate ribbon constructions -- for example, bridges of Fairy-type ribbons to cross chasms, tying people up into ribbons, and making trampolines and the like. She can also generate considerably more firearms and more intricate ones; pepperbox pistols, cannons, and other silly things become possible. She can also make a lot more smaller guns.

Her final evolution lets her start making otherwise physically impossible guns; she gets a very powerful Normal-type Move called Tiro Finale here, where she shoots a hugely oversized cannon at an unsuspecting enemy. Her ribbon-fu is maxed out, but she starts veering into the other territory of Fairy-type abilities: buffs! Her leadership gets some technical support, and Mami becomes able to provide support to her allies.

Starter Pokémon: Her starter Pokemon is a Flabébé named Charlotte. She has been friends with Charlotte since she joined the Valkyries, and is especially close to her. Charlotte won't bite her head off.

Notes/Special Considerations: Nothing of note!

SAMPLES
If desired, you may answer some of the following questions in lieu of samples. The questions must be answered in-character, as if they are being asked by a teacher, mentor, or superior. If your character is lying in their answer, please identify it as a lie. The purpose of these is to get an idea of how you will play your character in lieu of the other sample options. 4 questions answered can be used as a substitute for a first-person sample, and 6 questions answered can be used as a substitute for a third-person sample. Both samples may be replaced in this manner. If the character doesn't say enough in their answer, we may request a few more answers for an acceptable sample.

1) What would you say the role of Pokémon is in your life?

"They are our loyal companions! They make life easier for us and our tribe, and we should always be mindful of their feelings. We should hope to make them better with us."

2) What do you feel your role in your city is?

"A Valkyrie is a defender and protector of her city. I want to guard it against the many threats that are out there and the many dangers that are posed to Citadel. If I could, I would be sure no one else loses their parents. But... it may have to be only the ones I can save."

3) To what lengths would you go to rescue your allies if they were lost in the wilderness?

"You have to turn back to help them, until you're sure that you can't. But you shouldn't throw your life away, especially when others rely on you for defense. Sometimes, Windblessed must make difficult decisions."

4) What aspects and traits do you respect most in your individual fellow man?

"Honesty, reason, and morality. They aren't so uncommon, but it's rare to find them all together."

5) What do you look for in the Pokémon with whom you bond?

"A will to work with me and a great sense of kindness. Neither humans or Pokemon should be capricious or cruel."

6) The gods of old have returned. How would you be judged if you were chosen as a representative of humanity?

"I... shudder to think. I would hope that they see that I have done the best I could to defend my city and my friends. But I've attacked and fended off wild Pokemon before. We should be allowed to defend ourselves. I don't know that they would understand that."

7) A human has attacked a wild Pokémon who retaliates in defense. How do you respond and whom do you defend?

"That would be a difficult decision, but... I would protect the human. It would be wrong for them to attack, but we must stick by our own kind. Still, if the situation could be solved in a way besides violence, it should be."

8) What would you say is your greatest duty, and why?

"The defense of Citadel... and all of those who are innocent and can't defend themselves. We've been granted these abilities for a reason, and I must believe that reason is to help. I should do no less, especially for my fellow Valkyries. They took me in, when others might not have."

9) When encountering a rare and powerful Pokémon, what is most important? Researching it, bonding with it, or defeating it? Why?

"We should try to bond with it first. A powerful enough Pokemon could cause great harm to others. If we can reach an understanding and secure its help, that is the best outcome we could find. But otherwise... we should know how to defeat it."

10) What strengths make you most qualified for your role within your city?

"I am cool, graceful, quite skilled, and brave to a fault!"

(A total lie. Mami tries to be these things, but that's because she is putting on an act for her fellow Valkyries. In reality, her best strength is her dedication; that will keep her working hard for Citadel for years to come.)

MEGA EVOLUTION
Date of Joining: May 28, 2015

Personal Growth or Trial: When Mami joined the game, she was a bit of a distant and lonely type. She acted cheerful outwardly, but that hid a tendency to try to take everything on by herself and not let others in. The act she put on was pretty thorough, and it was as much a way to keep people at arm's distance as it was a way to appear to be what she felt she needs to be. She has since made a lot of friends who have helped challenge this.

This was especially evident in the nightmare event. Both in her own memories, where Yosuke helped her confront her fear of death and her guilt over her parents' death, and in others, she got to see people (such as Lux) experience similar struggles with duty. She began to realize that she had to look after her own happiness, partly by example and partly by realizing she needed to heed the advice she gave others.

She also has made friends with people and formed relationships that have given her much more to live for. Mami still believes in justice, but a firm belief in justice isn't the only thing she has to cling to anymore. She has a lot of people in Union that she cares a great deal for; she wants to protect them. She still wants to make the world better, and she can still be dogmatic in that desire, but she has come a long way there.

I think trying to protect those friends is how she'd first use the Mega Evolution. I'm open to seeing what opportunities come along.

Mega Evolution Typing and Abilities: Full disclosure: I am basing her Mega Evolution on her Witch form from side material from Puella Magi Madoka Magica, particularly the PSP game where it appears.

Her Mega Evolution swaps the Normal typing out for the Dark typing. This changes Mami's appearance accordingly; her clothing changes to be frillier and with a faint green tint, with some flowers and such decorating it. She also acquires a very pretty bonnet. She still manifests cannons and rifles, but they have the Dark typing instead; she can also make scythes and blades with some of her Dark-typing moves.

The big new abilities that she adds are creating a powerful Dark-type barrier around her, which can stop incoming damage for a turn. She can also create some distracting illusions, using a mix of her Dark and Fairy-type moves in this form. However, she trades mobility; Mami doesn't really move half as fast and she becomes more of a tank blaster type. She would typically use Mega Evolution to park somewhere, fire a lot of shots, and support her Pokemon, instead of the elegant aerial dance-fighting she usually does.
